How to take care of your children’s teeth – By Dr David Cui
Do you know how to take care of your children’s teeth? Ever wonder why kids either love or hate the dentist? Why do some kids seem to have perfect teeth whereas others seem to have countless issues? Here are a few helpful tips from Dr David Cui to ensure your children’s teeth are healthy and clean.
Check their teeth regularly
Preventing issues is much easier than having to deal with them. Regular visits to the dentist from the age of two allow us to monitor your children’s teeth for any problems, as well as giving them a professional clean. It will also make them more comfortable in the chair in case (god forbid) any work needs to be done when they are older. Make sure remain vigilant at home as well and let us know if anything is concerning you.
Make sure they brush their teeth (and help them if they’re young)
Just like adults, children need to brush their teeth twice a day, once in the morning and once at night. Use a soft bristled brush with a small pea sized amount of fluoride toothpaste. Make sure you’re physically helping brush your children’s teeth until they are at least 7. Young kids lack the dexterity (and probably concentration) to clean their teeth properly, so ensure you give them a thorough brush after they’ve had a go.
Make cleaning their teeth FUN
Kids have very short attention spans so try to find ways to make brushing their teeth more enjoyable. Things like reward charts and novelty brushes can help, also playing their favourite song or video will ensure they brush for a full two minutes. Also make sure you are leading by example, maybe make it a family thing where everyone brushes together.
Less sugar and less often
Not only is restricting sugar intake good for the body, it’s also good for your children’s teeth. Sugar is broken down to acid in the mouth, which weakens natural tooth. Pack healthier snacks and lunches instead of sugary treats, fresh water instead of coke or cordial. And if (on the occasion) your kids do have a sweet treat, make sure they have a glass of water to wash it off their teeth.
